Distracted Piloting on the Waterways?

Find me on:

boatingRecent statistics by the US Coast Guard for 2012 showed that 23% of reported boating accidents involved “Operator Inattention” or in their term, “improper outlook”.

The “unofficial” cause they claim is of course cell phone use and/or texting. While 23% may not seem to be a large percentage, it is a leading cause to boating accidents. Look to see a governmental call for stricter regulations against boaters who text and talk while piloting on our nation’s waterways.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has weighed in on this and said that our wireless devices are creating hazards for auto drivers as well as for airplane pilots, train engineers and boaters.

While some of the waterway incidents are absolutely caused by “inattention”, I tend to believe it is also due to the fun part of boating, the beautiful scenery, other boats and just plain having fun while out on the water. What we all have to be mindful of is the responsibility of maintaining attention to your own vessel as well as the actions by others nearby.
